Final Fantasy 14 Fans Are Upset With New Relic Crafting Step

Final Fantasy 14’s next mini-patch is out now, bringing a few extra time sinks to get us through the lonely months to Patch 7.5. One of these time sinks is the next step of the Phantom Relic weapons, which has already seen us doing the dreaded Atma farm and filling up Aetherwells by spamming Crystal Tower on repeat.

Our next step requires spamming roulettes to collect a whopping 1,200 Crystal Paste to hand in, but in order to get there, you have to go through yet another crafting step. That means gathering a bunch of expensive materials — including one very expensive sack of Umbral Clay — and then busting out your max level crafters to make the items you need. Either that, or go and get fleeced by the Market Board for every spare gil that you have.

It’s pretty similar to the last step, as you needed to craft Dark Matter for that, but the fact that the game’s combat relic is making people turn to crafting once again hasn’t gone down particularly well with quite a few people. For example, a Reddit thread on the Final Fantasy 14 subreddit by a user called Caius_GW has quite a bit of discussion surrounding whether combat relics should have crafting steps at all.

Final Fantasy 14: Complete Guide To Phantom Weapons

Here’s a complete walkthrough for every step of the Phantom Weapon Relics in Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail.

“I wouldn’t mind this, but since i don’t have the best gear, I am basically stuck with buying it from the marketplace,” reads a comment from a user called Uomodipunta. “These requirements feel unreasonable for someone who isn’t a high level crafter,” reads another comment from a user called CrueltyFreeRyan, who then argues that people will just buy the items from the Market Board anyway, so why make the crafting requirements so severe?

On the other hand, you do have people arguing that crafting is a part of the game and that relic weapons are optional content. Crafting is never a part of the MSQ, so if it can’t be part of the game’s optional content, then where is it allowed to be included? As a user called Araragidyne puts it, they think that people are upset over crafting being made “as part of the actual game and not just some niche, self-contained side content.

Personally, I’m of the opinion that players that want to focus on the combat side of the game shouldn’t really have to choose between being forced to level their crafters and spending a bunch of time getting scrip gear, melding it, and checking food buffs, or being fleeced by the Market Board. Either make the crafting step less intense, or just scrap it entirely, especially since crafters have their own set of relic weapons that they work towards that don’t require bonking enemies on the head with frying pans and blacksmith hammers.
