Earlier today, Ubisoft broke the hearts of Prince of Persia fans across the world by canceling the long-awaited Sands of Time remake, and then kicked Assassin’s Creed fans in the groin by potentially delaying the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake as well. It’s a massive time of restructuring for Ubisoft at the moment, and a lot of Prince of Persia fans are worried that the series is getting lost in the shuffle.
Of course, that’s not the official story from Ubisoft, as in an official statement announcing the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake’s cancellation, it assured fans that it “does not mean we’re stepping away from the franchise.” That makes it sound like Ubisoft has plans to support the series, but it seems as though fans aren’t quite convinced.
Prince of Persia: Sands Of Time Remake’s Cancellation Has Fans Distraught
Judging from the reactions to the cancellation, it seems as though the vast majority of fans either want the Prince of Persia license to be sold by Ubisoft, or that the series is just straight up dead now. For example, in a post on the Prince of Persia subreddit discussing the cancellation, a user called Moonraker207 says that “they killed the series” with this cancellation. Another called Sweaters76 think that the “Prince franchise is pretty much dead, let’s be honest.”

I Really Wish Hollow Knight: Silksong Had Learned A Crucial Lesson From Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown
I’m tired of hitting the same dead ends over and over again.
Another user called Alishock is now worried about the franchise going dormant again, saying that “they’re gonna keep their goddamn cold dead hands holding onto it so nobody else does, despite them not planning to do anything with it anyway.” Even if Ubisoft does decide to sell, fans aren’t too optimistic about who it would be sold to, as one user believes “if they sell, they’ll probably sell it some shady mobile company for it to suck the last bits of life out of it.”
While Ubisoft has stated it remains committed to the Prince of Persia franchise, you can understand why fans are doubtful based on the publisher’s actions recently. Not only has it canned the Sands of Time remake, but it also completely dissolved Ubisoft Montpellier, the developer of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, a game which is widely considered the best in the series by many.
If Ubisoft is canceling Prince of Persia games and shutting down studios that actually make good ones, you can see why so many are disheartened with the lack of good news coming from the franchise at the moment. Hopefully, this isn’t the end of Prince of Persia as we know it, but it’s not exactly showing very many signs of life right now.
