A bunch of apparent Fable concept art is being shared around online, and if it’s real, it means we could be returning to a location we haven’t seen since Fable 2.
MP1st has shared these images, claiming to have gotten them from an artist who worked on the upcoming Fable game. We can’t find any publicly shared portfolios that these pieces could have originated from, so take it with a pinch of salt, but this very much looks like the real deal.
The Fable Reboot Could Be Pulling From Fable 2 And 3
If legitimate, there are several pieces of concept art depicting Bloodstone, a location from Fable 2. This was the coastal town effectively led by Reaver, and you went there towards the end of the game to recruit him for the final boss. Here, it’s looking a little more developed, with a map showing different districts, an arena, and even a path to what is referred to as “Pub Island”.
Elsewhere, we see what is said to be the player’s home, which, in concept art, was named Hamlet. What is interesting to note is that there are two different versions of Hamlet shown, one where the home looks completely run down and abandoned, with the surrounding area overgrown and neglected. That could suggest that player choices will influence the appearance of the area, just like we saw with Bowerstone Old Town and Oakfield in Fable 2, or Bowerstone Old Quarter and Millfields in Fable 3.
Speaking of Fable 3, there are more nods to its grimier, darker aesthetic than I would have expected to see here. We see this in the art pieces that show a sewer location, and then another in what appears to be a cave inhabited by balvarines. In fact, the balvarines are shown to be keeping their victims’ bodies hanging in their lair, making them even nastier than what we’ve seen in the past.
Of course, even if this artwork is legitimate, there is no telling if any of these ideas actually made it into the game. It’s possible that these were just ideas being explored earlier on in development. We will get a better idea of what tone Playground is going for when Fable is shown off during Xbox’s Developer Direct this Thursday.
