Yoshi has been Mario’s faithful sidekick ever since the dinosaur made his first appearance more than 35 years ago in Super Mario World. Most Mario fans have loved Yoshi unconditionally ever since. However, there might have been a select few who witnessed Yoshi eat Princess Peach at the end of the game, forever tainting their opinion of him from a very young age.
Okay, it’s actually very unlikely that anyone encountered the unintended ending of Super Mario World as a child, where, seconds after Mario finally saves Peach, Yoshi gobbles her up. That’s because it requires a very specific series of glitches to bring Yoshi into the final Bowser battle with you, and then more specific actions once he’s in there to experience that awkward and dark end.
Yoshi Can Eat Peach At The End Of Super Mario World
Supper Mario Broth, an account dedicated to sharing unique and interesting glitches, bugs, and just general information about Mario games, shared footage of the glitched Mario World ending that was captured by switchpalacecorner. It shows Mario riding Yoshi as the plumber defeats Bowser, which, as fans of the game will know, shouldn’t be possible.
Once Bowser has been defeated, Peach falls from the sky as a mushroom thanks to one of the many glitches in play. As the mushroom is about to hit the floor, Yoshi pokes out his tongue to eat it, and at that point, the item briefly transforms back into Princess Peach before disappearing into the dinosaur sidekick’s stomach.
Eating Peach Softlocks Super Mario World’s Ending
With Bowser defeated, but Peach gone, the game isn’t sure what it’s supposed to do next. That’s why it’s not recommended that you try to reach this false ending after having played through all of Super Mario World. With no way to conclude the game as intended, since Yoshi isn’t supposed to be there, but Peach is, Mario and Yoshi just stand there, awkwardly staring at each other for the rest of time after the plumber just watched his pet eat his girlfriend.
Again, it is incredibly unlikely, basically impossible, that this would happen to anyone by accident. As highlighted by Supper Mario Broth in the replies to the post, most will need to follow a detailed guide just to get Yoshi into World’s final fight with you. As for the glitch that turns Peach into a mushroom and then, very briefly, back again, that is commonly referred to as the Item Swap glitch.
Basically, if you take the mushroom out of the reserve item box as Peach is spawning, it results in the glitch you can see in the clip above. Yet another glitch that needs to happen to pull off this elaborate, and let’s be honest, unwanted ending to Super Mario World. Feel free to try and replicate it if you really want to, but probably best to just watch and wonder how someone ever stumbled upon this in the first place.
