The announcement of Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ big 3.0 update was a huge surprise. After Nintendo had confirmed that the previous major update, which included new villagers, DIY recipes, and Brewster’s Cafe, would be the last, it shocked the world in October by revealing it had one more big update planned for the game.
That update was scheduled to release on Thursday, January 15. But, as it did with the previous update, Nintendo has sprung one final AC: NH surprise on fans, by dropping version 3.0 early— and it’s available now.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ Massive 3.0 Update Has Been Released A Day Early
It was always a surprise when Nintendo announced it was ending support for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The game is the storied developer’s fifth-best-selling of all time, with only Wii Sports, Mario Kart 8, Pokemon Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow, and Super Mario Bros. selling more.
It’s one that will live on in the pantheon of Nintendo greats and helped millions of players through the pandemic, so ending support so soon after launch was a shocker. Thankfully, version 3.0 was announced, giving the title a new lease of life.

Originally scheduled for January 15, Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ 3.0 update is available today, on January 14. Reports have suggested that you’ll have to manually search for the update, which is the only catch, but that’s easily done.
To do this, simply hover over the game tile on your Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, press the + button, and hit “software update”, followed by “via the internet.” The download will then begin.
So, What’s Coming In AC: NH Version 3.0
There’s plenty to get excited about with this new Animal Crossing: New Horizons update.
Arguably, the most exciting part of the update is the introduction of “Slumber Islands.” Animal Crossing: New Horizons 3.0 will allow players to visit and customize three brand-new islands, in addition to their home island. They reside in the world of dreams, meaning players can customize them in ways they could only dream of doing on their main island.
The new update also adds the Resort Hotel. It works similarly to New Horizons’ paid DLC, Happy Home Paradise, but instead of customizing homes for wanting villagers, you’ll be helping the resort by decorating hotel rooms. This, in turn, will earn you Hotel Tickets, which can be spent on a range of new items, including retro Nintendo games.
The game will also introduce villagers from The Legend of Zelda and Splatoon series, Lego-themed items, and increase your item storage capacity, alongside some sneaky quality-of-life features Nintendo has yet to reveal.
The coming days will be exciting for Animal Crossing fans, as they strive to find everything introduced in this new update, and personally, we could not be more excited.
