Baldur’s Gate 3 Lets You Stop A Guaranteed Death In Act 1 With Some Clever Trickery

If you’ve played Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll have seen Kanon. You may not remember him, but you’ve definitely witnessed his untimely demise at the sharp end of a goblin arrow.

You see, Kanon is the tiefling who opens the gate for Aradin and his men when the party first arrives at the Emerald Grove. His primary purpose in the narrative is to give the tiefling refugees someone to mourn, especially Kanon’s sister Arka, who is the tiefling threatening to murder the imprisoned goblin Sazza.

The conventional thinking was that Kanon’s death was set in stone, a scripted event that couldn’t be influenced. That answer didn’t satisfy Aero_Naught, however, who set out to find a way to save the doomed tiefling, and made some incredible discoveries along the way.

Today Is Not Your Day

The poster’s original method was a complex caper involving a dead Wyll, but thankfully, further experimentation yielded an easier method of saving Kanon.

There were two hurdles to overcome to save Kanon: stopping the cutscene from triggering, and ensuring a scripted “die” command doesn’t trigger on him. The latter is a failsafe Larian placed in the game to ensure Kanon dies if the party chooses to avoid the Emerald Grove.

“Ready To Begrudgingly Do Our Bidding”: You Can Keep Wyll In An Evil Baldur’s Gate 3 Run, You Just Have To Kill Him First

Can’t leave camp if you’re dead, eh?

First, you’ll need someone who can summon a Mage Hand, such as Gale. Summon the Mage Hand at a safe distance from the Grove entrance. Then, initiate a conversation between the caster and another party member before swapping back to controlling the Hand. Fly the Hand past the cutscene trigger point, which will prevent the cutscene from triggering because the caster is already involved in a conversation. The trigger will now fail to activate when the party approaches the Grove. You’ll need to walk deep enough into the Grove to ensure everyone involved (i.e. Aradin, Zevlor, Arka) moves to their next locations.

Next, we need to stop Kanon from keeling over from unknown causes. This can be done by a quirk in the game’s faction system, which causes Kanon specifically to become hostile and then instantly friendly if someone around him is attacked. We return to the gate and attack the character Elegis, which initiates dialogue because the party was seen assaulting someone.

Choose the option to attack, and combat will begin for a moment before immediately ending. Then, walk down the hill and attack the character Kaldani and choose the attack option once more. Kaldani, Wyll and Kanon will all become temporarily hostile. One need only knock them all unconscious to trick the game into thinking Kanon is already dead, preventing the die command from being executed.

Kanon will then wake up, alive as on the day he was brought forth into the cruel world that almost took his life. Naturally, Arka and Memnos will still act if he’s dead, and Kanon doesn’t have anything to say on the matter. Still, he’s alive, and they can sort out all their familial and personal issues at a later time.
