While enjoying your time in Heartopia, there are several hobbies you can invest time in to level up your skills, make money, and have an overall better in-game experience. However, you won’t have access to everything right from the start. To unlock each hobby, you’ll first need to level up your rank in the Developer’s Guild.
The Developer’s Guild, or DG, is something you’ll gain access to almost immediately when starting Heartopia, and each rank will unlock a variety of new features and activities in the game, including hobbies. For the first few, you won’t have a choice of which hobby you’re able to unlock, but later on, you will be given options to choose from.
How To Unlock And Upgrade Hobbies
As mentioned, unlocking hobbies in Heartopia is achieved through the DG. When you level up, you’ll often receive a Hobby Expansion Ticket as a reward, which can then be given to a Hobby Mentor in exchange for teaching you their associated hobby. Initially, you’ll be required to give your Hobby Expansion Ticket to a specific mentor, but after the first two, you’ll have a choice between three.
Eventually, you will unlock all the hobbies in the game; the only difference when given a choice between a few is the order in which you unlock them. Selecting one hobby over the others does not mean you’ll never be able to learn the others. It just means that you’ll have to wait until you earn another Hobby Expansion Ticket.
Additionally, there is no right answer when using your Hobby Selection Ticket. If given the option, you’re free to select anything available to you. However, there are times when one may benefit you earlier on. For example, when given the option between Cooking, Insect Catching, and Birdwatching, the Cooking hobby should probably be learned first, since it will be the most profitable.
At any point, you can open your watch and look at the D.G. Member’s Guild option to see your current level as well as what level you need to be to unlock the next hobby. To see how far you are from reaching the next level, look at your Contribution Medals at the bottom. Unfortunately, you can only earn a limited number of these per day by completing requests, so you can’t significantly speed this up.
How To Unlock Every Hobby
Currently, there are only seven hobbies that can be unlocked in Heartopia. They include Fishing, Gardening, Cooking, Insect Catching, Birdwatching, Cat Caring, and Dog Caring. The method of unlocking each one and how to upgrade them can be seen in the table below.

While the benefits of upgrading each hobby are specific, they offer similar perks. Generally, upgrading each hobby will result in products that are higher quality or have more stars, and certain upgrades may even reduce the amount of work you need to put in. For example, upgraded Gardening can mean less time spent growing higher-quality crops.
How To Upgrade Hobbies
When it comes to upgrading hobbies, you’ll of course only be able to do so once you’ve unlocked the hobby. Once you’ve started doing the hobby, you’ll already be naturally on your way towards upgrading it, and that is because simply doing the hobby is how you upgrade it. If you select the Hobby option on your watch, you should see a selection screen with all of your unlocked hobbies.
Here, if you click on one, then you’ll see a list of different levels within that hobby, as well as vague details on what each level will unlock. While you can’t see the requirements for levels beyond the next one, the requirements will be the same.
First, you’ll need to fill the meter at the bottom, which will vary for every hobby and every level. The way you do this is by participating in a hobby. So, for the Cooking hobby, cooking any dish will help fill its associated meter, and the rest of the hobbies work the same way. Secondly, you’ll need a few Hobby Upgrade Tickets.
The amount of Hobby Upgrade Tickets required will vary by level and hobby, but you can see both the meter requirements and the Hobby Upgrade Ticket requirements for your next level upgrade by looking at the bottom of the selected hobby’s page. Hobby Upgrade Tickets can be earned like most things, through the DG, and also as Collection Point Rewards.
Once you have met both the meter requirements and have the number of Hobby Upgrade Tickets necessary, you can simply tap the option to upgrade the hobby. If you view your hobbies, you should even see a little notification above any that can be upgraded at the moment.
You’re free to upgrade them in any order you choose, but it’s recommended that you focus on the ones that will provide you with the most value, especially early on.

Heartopia hands you a lot of currencies and very little explanation. Let’s fix that.
Which Hobbies Should You Unlock And Upgrade First?
While there are a few hobbies you must unlock in a specific order, you will have the opportunity to choose which order you unlock three options. Once you reach level 5 of the DG, you’ll be gifted one Hobby Expansion Ticket and be able to choose whether you’d like to unlock Cooking, Insect Watching, or Birdwatching.
You’ll only be able to unlock one at this time, and then another at Level 8, and finally, the last at Level 11. Following that, you’ll unlock Cat Caring and Dog Caring at Level 12, but Cat Caring must be started before Dog Caring. So, the recommended order in which you should unlock each hobby is:
- Fishing (Mandatory)
- Gardening (Mandatory)
- Cooking
- Insect Catching
- Birdwatching
- Cat Caring (Mandatory)
- Dog Caring
Since you’ll already have Fishing and Gardening, Cooking is the next recommended hobby to unlock. Both fish and the crops you harvest can be used with the Cooking hobby to prepare dishes that can provide you with energy or be sold for quick cash. While there’s nothing wrong with unlocking Insect Catching or Birdwatching first, Cooking works so well in tandem with the mandatory unlocks.
From there, Insect Catching is recommended next, since you’ll be able to sell them or display them in your home. Finally, Birdwatching is the last one you should unlock of the three, since it provides the least significant rewards. Afterward, you’ll unlock Cat Caring, since it is required before Dog Caring.
As for which order you should upgrade, this isn’t as strict as the unlock order, but if you’d like recommendations, then Fishing, Gardening, and Cooking should be your main priority when it comes to upgrades. You’ll likely be doing these the most anyway, so they should naturally progress the fastest.
After that, there’s no real order that will make much of a difference, but if you have a pet, it’s recommended that you work on upgrading the hobby associated with your Cat or Dog. With all that said, you don’t truly need to prioritize specific upgrades because you’ll be repeating the hobbies most beneficial to you, so the ones you can naturally upgrade first are probably the ones you should upgrade.
