You may have noticed while filling your Pokedex in Pokemon Legends: Z-A that Dark-type Pokemon are few and far between. But the lack of impressive options doesn’t detract from the potential of the best Dark-type Pokemon in the game. With only 230 Pokemon in the base Pokedex (231 if you include Diancie), there were still some great Dark Pokemon among your options.
The Mega Dimension DLC demands that you maintain a healthy range of options at your disposal, and despite having to jump through a few hoops and playing through to the end to catch the best Dark-type Pokemon, it offers a major buff to the type.
Pokemon from the base game are included, but their strength is judged based on viability within the context of endgame and postgame content in the DLC.

Overqwil’s rarity and unusual evolution make it one of the most difficult Dark-type Pokemon to add to your team, but once you’re done, you’ll have a strong attacker at your disposal. Unfortunately, Overqwil is a glass cannon, making it susceptible to one-shot KOs if not used conservatively, but its solid set of resistances and immunities helps improve its survivability.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A – Mega Dimension: Best Fairy Pokemon To Have In Your Team
These Fairy Pokemon came ready for a fight.
Poison, Grass, Dark, and Ghost-type attacks are resisted, while Psychic-type moves won’t do anything to Overqwil. On top of this, Overqwil only suffers from a single weakness against Ground-type moves, ensuring that you won’t be vulnerable to many dangerous attacks. Keep this Pokemon away from special attackers, and it will do a fantastic job of obliterating Pokemon weak to its moves.

Krookodile stands tall, maintaining relevance from the base game through to the DLC as an excellent early-game option in Mega Dimension’s story. A strong Attack stat, along with solid HP and Speed, makes Krookodile an extremely usable option if you’re bringing a maxed-out one into the DLC to help you deal with the onslaught of Rogue Mega Pokemon that you’ll face.
Krookodile’s glaring weakness is its lack of a Mega Evolution in a DLC that so heavily prefers you use Megas against the toughest bosses. The Plus Moves mechanic is a nice alternative that allows Krookodile to maintain usability against those bosses, but they’re much more difficult to use in succession compared to Mega Evolving and firing off as many attacks as you can during the allotted duration.

Scrafty’s BST won’t impress you at first glance, but Mega Scrafty’s massive glow up will have you reconsidering everything you thought about this Pokemon. Its BST jumps from 488 to 588, benefitting from huge upgrades in its most important stats. While Scrafty’s defenses were already solid enough at base, they got even better, with both jumping to 135, ensuring that this Pokemon will survive several hits.
On top of those defensive boosts, Mega Scrafty gets a huge Attack boon, jumping to 130, which makes it an incredibly viable choice against vulnerable Rogue Mega Pokemon throughout the Mega Dimension story. This Pokemon’s availability in the base game makes it a prime candidate to use as your primary Dark Pokemon as you progress, until you eventually gain access to one of the best Dark types ever.

Despite not having a Mega Evolution, Yveltal surpasses Scrafty due to the sheer strength of its BST, notably in its 131 in both attacking stats. Its defenses are also incredibly solid and supported by a strong HP stat that allows Yveltal to sustain a few hits without worrying about being knocked out.
The best part of Yveltal’s kit is its movepool, which gives access to Oblivion Wing. While this move is Flying-type, it represents a fantastic way of inflicting damage while replenishing HP in more difficult fights, like against Rogue Mega Pokemon. Any Pokemon that has access to HP-sapping moves is an excellent choice against the DLC bosses, especially when they’re supported by such high base stats.

Absol’s base form is a fairly run-of-the-mill Pokemon, but the Mega Dimension DLC changed the Dark-type landscape in a variety of ways, notably in giving Absol a second Mega Evolution. Mega Absol Z gets a massive stat overhaul, boosting the base form’s BST from 465 to 565. While the upgrade is fairly standard, the stat distribution is a major help to this Pokemon’s niche as a sweeper glass cannon.
154 Attack and 151 Speed form a deadly combination that makes Absol capable of taking out opponents before they can even attack, which helps to offset Absol’s untouched defensive stats. Despite the lack of defensive capabilities, Absol’s offense is good enough to keep it safe by ending fights before they even really begin.

Greninja’s base form is already solid, and after years of missing out on a special form, Mega Greninja is finally available, and it was worth the wait. Design aside, this Pokemon’s BST jumps by 100 points, with 125 Attack, 133 Special Attack, and 142 Speed standing out as the key upgrades to its combat prowess.
Aside from its access to powerful Dark-type moves like Night Slash and Dark Pulse, Greninja boasts an incredibly diverse movepool that gives it plenty of coverage to decimate its opponents of varying types. It might not stand up to the fabled Ash Greninja, but it’s an excellent stand-in since we likely won’t ever be getting that Greninja form in a game.

Tyranitar has been wreaking havoc since its introduction in the second generation, and despite having one of the oldest Mega Evolutions in the series, it still holds up incredibly well today. Tyranitar’s BST speaks for itself, and its access to moves like Crunch gives it a huge offensive advantage.
If you can avoid matchups against Fighting-type Pokemon, Tyranitar will be one of the most deadly Pokemon in the Mega Dimension DLC, thanks to its incredible strength against Rogue Mega Pokemon. Tyranitar’s other six weaknesses make it a hard Pokemon to use as a generalist, ultimately opening the door for another Pokemon to claim the top spot.

Darkrai’s BST was already good enough to justify its inclusion as the strongest Dark-type Pokemon that debuted in the Mega Dimension DLC, but access to a Mega Evolution sends this Pokemon’s viability to a new level. Mega Darkrai is one of the best all-around Pokemon in terms of BST, with 120 Attack, 130 Defense, 165 Special Attack, and 130 Special Defense forming the core of its strength.
Its signature move, Dark Void, is an excellent option and a massive help against Rogue boss Pokemon, and its survivability makes it hard to argue against Darkrai as the best Dark Pokemon in Legends: Z-A.
