If Pidgeot taught us anything, it’s that Flying-type Pokemon are usually stuck with boring secondary types, but luckily, Pokemon Legends: Z-A brings back some of the most powerful options from throughout the series. The base game gave us a solid group of Flying-type Pokemon to enjoy, but those with Mega Evolutions became far more valuable once the Mega Dimension DLC dropped.
Rogue Mega Pokemon dictate the meta game in Mega Dimension, as your best method to defeat these rampaging rogue Pokemon is to fight fire with fire. You’ll benefit from Flying-type Pokemon who can Mega Evolve and inflict major damage to the Rogue Mega Pokemon bosses you’ll face throughout your journey in Hyperspace Lumiose.
Flying-type Pokemon from the base game are included, but the context of the Mega Dimension DLC greatly influences new placements.

Flamigo might be one of the most bizarre Pokemon ever created. After all, it’s basically just a flamingo that can’t spell, but a closer look at its stats tells a different story. This Pokemon’s Attack stat stands out as the clear leader of its Base Stat Total (BST), and its secondary Fighting typing means that it can take advantage of a wider variety of coverage moves.

Who comes up with these evolution requirements?
Luckily, Fighting and Flying’s weaknesses don’t overlap to cause a quadruple weakness, but you won’t gain many defensive resistances from the combination either. Flamigo might have been even higher on this list if it had access to its abilities like in the main series games, but it still serves as a decent option for you to use early on in your Hyperspace Lumiose adventure.

Crobat is one of the best Flying-type options added in the Mega Dimension DLC, but it’s best used against opponents that don’t boast many coverage moves, since this Pokemon’s defenses are quite frail. Luckily, Crobat can usually attack multiple times in succession thanks to its unbelievably high 130 base speed, giving you the chance to finish battles quickly.
However, you’ll rely on physical moves like Aerial Ace, Dual Wingbeat, and Sky Attack, which aren’t necessarily as good as a more powerful option, like Hurricane. Despite its limitations, Crobat will serve you well as you progress through the DLC, offering some solid Poison-type coverage to keep your team selection flexible enough to build around its weaknesses.

Talonflame’s BST is far from impressive, but luckily, its high speed will let you use plenty of attacks to open battles, which can be the difference between a quick victory and an elongated encounter. Unfortunately, this Fire and Flying-type bird is still waiting on a Mega Evolution, or it might’ve been one of the strongest Pokemon available in the Mega Dimension DLC.
Even so, its physical attacking abilities are solid and will help you get the job done early in the DLC, but you’ll quickly find more well-rounded options to choose from, especially if you don’t mind working with a quadruple weakness to Rock-type moves. Talonflame’s movepool is easily its biggest draw, with access to plenty of coverage moves alongside Dual Wingbeat and Sky Attack.

Corviknight represents something of an antithesis to Crobat, as this Pokemon is Flying and Steel-type, the latter of which is directly resistant to Poison attacks. Furthermore, while Crobat was a fast Pokemon focused on attacking as quickly and often as possible, Corviknight is much slower, and its main draw centers around tanking hits and whittling down opposing HP bars.
Corviknight’s offenses might not be stellar, but this Pokemon is an excellent tank that can function as a pivot when your main attacker falls in battle, while also offering you a chance to heal up and reload for a counterattack. Complete immunity to Poison and Ground attacks massively helps this Pokemon to excel as a wall, while eight more resistances ensure it will only be in danger against a few types.

Hawlucha is a straight upgrade over Flamigo, with the main difference being this Pokemon’s access to a powerful Mega Evolution, which greatly improves its fairly tame BST. Hawlucha improves its Attack to 137 when it Mega Evolves, with further boosts to both of its defenses to ensure it has what it takes to tank some hits and hang around long enough to finish off its opponents.
The 600 BST for Mega Hawlucha does plenty of heavy lifting, but its access to a variety of physical moves, including Brick Break, Brave Bird, and its signature move, Flying Press, ensures it can hit many foes hard. Mega Hawlucha can take on Rogue Mega Pokemon effectively and justifies being brought into the DLC from the start, thanks to its viability in main story battles.

Charizard might struggle against Rock-type attacks, but this Pokemon offers a major upgrade over Talonflame thanks to its superior BST and access to two Mega Evolutions. However, Mega Charizard Y is the clear choice for superb Flying-type viability, as it receives a massive boost to its stats that allow it to hit hard with moves like Hurricane.
159 Special Attack is an incredibly strong starting point, and a 100 or higher in both defenses and speed makes Charizard stand out as one of the best Flying-type Pokemon available. Make use of its massive Special Attack and watch opposing Pokemon melt as Charizard barely takes a scratch, provided you keep it far away from Electric and Rock moves.

When it comes to Mega Pokemon options, Staraptor is easily one of the best new Mega Evolutions added to Mega Dimension, despite not blowing you away with its base form’s BST. Upon Mega Evolving, Staraptor’s Attack jumps to 140, with massive increases to its Defense, Special Defense, and speed.
The ability to tank hits is key for Pokemon that can Mega Evolve, as you’ll need to refill their Mega Energy and Mega Evolve them again if they faint in their Mega forms. Luckily, Staraptor becomes much more competent at surviving and doesn’t suffer from any quadruple weaknesses.

Rayquaza flies far above the pack as the best Flying-type Pokemon in the Mega Dimension DLC, and arguably the best Pokemon among its legendary peers. While its BST is already impressive, Mega Rayquaza can use powerful signature moves like Dragon Ascent and Hurricane to decimate Flying-weak foes.
This Pokemon’s only downside is how long it will take to encounter, as you’ll only have access to it toward the very end of the DLC’s postgame. Despite the wait, Rayquaza’s strength is well-worth it, as it eclipses the competition in almost every category.
