How To Upgrade Your Cannon Shots In Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has been released, which means there are all types of alien lifeforms to incinerate, puzzles to solve, and lonely dark corridors to walk down. Taking place on a hostile alien planet, players will guide Samus Aran across six distinct zones that each have their own upgrades, abilities, and gimmicks you’ll need to overcome.

To do so, one of your primary tools will be the three elemental variants of Samus’ cannon. These are the Fire Shot, Ice Shot, and Thunder Shot. All three of these can be upgraded twice to improve their potency, so here’s where to obtain all the different chips, but the Shrine locations for upgrading your weapon.

The first elemental shot you obtain, you can get the Flame Shot in the early portion of the Flare Pool. Accessible after you attempt to cross the bridge and have it collapse in front of you, returning to the path you initially came through will cause several robotic enemies to emerge from a previously locked door.

After destroying the enemies, make your way to the Scrapyard and kill the group of Pyremites hanging around. Once they’re dead, ascend the crane in the center, turn into a Morph Ball, and roll to the end of it. Place a bomb at the end to dislodge the plasma cutter and then jump down to inspect it. Doing so will reward you with the Fire Chip, which you can bring back to Engineer MacKenzie to earn the Flame Shot.

How To Get The Charged Flame Shot

You can find the first upgrade for the Flame Shot in the Rings of Stone Shrine, which is southeast of the Ice Belt. Upon entering, make your way to the room with the stone rings embedded on the floor and scan them. When the rings rise into the air, you’ll be able to see a single object floating in the middle.

As they spin, turn your visor on and fire a control beam at the rings. Since this slows down time, you should be able to easily guide the round past all the rings and into the object in the center of them. Hitting it will cause the rings to form an elevator which you can take to the next floor.

When you arrive, just approach the podium to claim your prize. Don’t forget to turn around and fire another Control Beam in the hole above the door you entered through! This will open up a passage so you can get a Shot Expansion upgrade.

Located in the Ladder of Thought Shrine just north of Valley Green, all this shrine requires to complete is that you possess the Flame Shot. Upon entering, make your way to the main chamber that is filled with Crawler webbing on the walls, central pillars, and floor.

Clear out all the webs with the Flame Shot and then use your psychic ability to raise the pillar a little bit. Hop onto it, then move the pillar next to you a bit higher, and jump onto that. You will repeat this process to ascend to the platform over your head. Before you progress, make sure to Bomb Jump up to the hole on the right so you can grab the Energy Tank inside.

Here’s a few essential tips and tricks to help get you started on the planet of Viewros in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.

How To Get The Ice Chip And Ice Shot Upgrades

For the Ice Chip, you can only acquire this after you have turned the power on to the station in the Ice Belt and defeated the boss at the base of the facility. Once both of these tasks have been accomplished, make your way all the way back to the Loading Crane at the start of the level.

Climb up to the second floor and use a Missile to blow out the cracked window overlooking the main room. Now, enter your visor and fire a Control Beam through the window. Guide the shot around the corner to your right and hit the locked door’s glowing button in the center. This will open it on the side you fired the round, giving you access to that part of the room.

Now just approach the Boost Ball hologram, turn into a Morph Ball, and keep hitting B until the crane drops the container on the ground. Approach and interact with the container to obtain the Ice Chip.

How To Get The Charged Ice Shot

Your journey will now take you to the Source of Spring shrine, which is on the southeast side of the map. Upon arriving, make your way through the antechamber by dragging the stone into the door with your psychic ability.

When you enter the next room, equip Ice Shot, and freeze the left and right waterfalls, but leave the center one intact. This will lower the platform in the middle and let you move another stone down to unlock the newly revealed door. Now just enter the room to claim the Charged Ice Shot. Additionally, you can find a Missile Expansion by rolling through the hole behind the left waterfall.

How To Get The Super Ice Shot

You can get the Super Ice Shot by heading to the Floating Path Shrine, which is northwest of the Volt Forge. You will need the Thunder Shot first to open the lock to get inside.

Once in the shrine, progress to the main chamber with two Psychic Orbs and six stone platforms that have empty sockets. Use the Psychic Orbs to activate the platforms, forming a walkway you can jump across. You’ll want to zigzag across the platforms; that way, you can actually see and pull the stone from the platforms to socket into the next one you want to hop on.

Then just snag an orb from a platform once on the other side, throw it into the socket over the door, and head inside to get the Super Ice Shot. You can also find a Shot Expansion on the lower floor of the main puzzle chamber by bringing a stone down there and placing it into the statue facing the wall.

How To Get The Thunder Chip And Thunder Shot Upgrades

The last chip is incredibly hard to miss, as the game will guide you to the place where it resides. After you get the Psychic Grapple, return to the Volt Forge and descend to the lowest depths of Tower 1. Upon entering the Power Core, look for the pylon in the back left corner that is short-circuiting. Interact with it to obtain the Thunder Chip and trigger a boss battle.

How To Get The Charged Thunder Shot

Charge Thunder Shot can be found in the Falling Labyrinth Shrine that’s northeast of the Chrono Tower. Upon entering, progress forward until you reach a room where you need to socket one of those purple Psychic Balls into the ceiling.

Doing this will cause a bunch of Psychic Spider Tracks to appear on the walls. You now need to navigate these tracks without being hit by the bugs traversing the walls. These little guys infinitely spawn, so don’t bother trying to clear the room.

Make sure to jump to the lower floor before you can progress. There’s a Shot Expansion in the central pillar you can access by rolling through the convenient Morph Ball-sized hole.

The trick to beating this is to just be cautious, as a single touch from these enemies will knock you all the way to the bottom. Just take it slow, as you can outrun the enemies if they start to give chase if you’re on their track. When you reach the top, just go through the door, and your prize will be floating in front of the statue.

How To Get The Super Thunder Shot

Your final elemental upgrade is in the Ring of Thunder shrine, which is southeast of the Chrono Tower. A supremely easy shrine to complete. Just approach the ring of stone pillars and pull the two out of the ground with glowing purple tops. This will complete the ring, and now all you need to do is shoot any of them with the Thunder Shot to form a ring of electricity.

Doing so will activate the elevator in the center of the room, which leads you to the final elemental weapon upgrade! You can now take on any enemy in the game with ease.
