There are plenty of reasons for countries to ban Roblox. Almost every second news story about the platform is how it’s a breeding ground for child predators. However, Russia has banned the gaming platform for an all-together different reason. As reported by Reuters, the country’s communications watchdog, Roskomnadzor, has said that it distributes extremist materials and “LGBT propaganda”.
“Roskomnadzor has restricted access to the American internet service Roblox due to the discovery of mass and repeated distribution of materials promoting and justifying extremist and terrorist activity, calls for violent crimes, and propaganda of LGBT themes,” said the agency in a translated statement (via RIA Novosti).
Roblox Banned In Russia
“Children are subjected to sexual harassment, intimate photos are coerced from them, and they are forced to engage in depraved acts and violence,” continued Roskomnadzor. “Cases of such illegal behavior have long been widespread in both the US and Russia.”
Speaking to Reuters, a Roblox representative said, “We respect the local laws and regulations in the countries where we operate and believe Roblox provides a positive space for learning, creation and meaningful connection for everyone.” They continued saying the platform has “a deep commitment to safety and we have a robust set of proactive and preventative safety measures designed to catch and prevent harmful content on our platform.”
I’m Worried About My Kids Finding Roblox, But Not For The Reasons You Think
Roblox is coming to PS5 which means it’s only a matter of time until my son asks to play it.
It’s unclear if the platform will be allowed to launch again in the country if it removes all LGBT themes. Russia holds a strong stance against the LGBT community, even going as far as calling it extremist.
Roblox has been under the spotlight for a while now due to the safety concerns of children using the platform, especially due to predators who use it to contact them. The fact that it is immensely popular also doesn’t help. Things are so dire that the Louisiana State Attorney General has also filed a lawsuit against the company.
The company has said that it has implemented new safety features like “facial age estimation technology” and ID verification and parental permission.
