Over the past few days, “Gaming Twitter” has gone crazy because of a recent post from Geoff Keighley, the host of The Game Awards, that features a statue in a desert with some rather interesting creatures not too dissimilar from what we’ve seen from The Elder Scrolls, God of War and Diablo.
Well, it looks like you scratch God of War off the list of potential outcomes, as Cory Barlog, the director behind the two most recent God of War titles, crashed a recent Twitch stream from Luke Stephens to let everyone know:
“No, it’s not GOW.”
Now, I don’t mean to be a conspiracy theorist, but Barlog only said it’s not GOW. He didn’t specify which GOW he’s referring to. Because as of 2025, Gears of War, the other GOW in gaming, is now on PlayStation.
A few years ago, we’d have totally taken what he’s saying at face value since Gears was still on Xbox, and the idea that it would be on anything but Microsoft’s flagship console would’ve been considered preposterous.

The Game Awards Doesn’t Care About The Future Of Video Games
With the abandonment of Future Class, The Game Awards makes its intentions clear.
Well, now we live in a reality where GOW can mean two different things. Thankfully, as of this writing, The Game Awards are only 10 days away, so we’ll know for sure then. Still, that hasn’t stopped all sorts of pipe dream theories from sprouting up.
The Fact That We Still Have Zero Clue What This Statue Is Teasing Is Going To Bother Me Until Dec. 11
As my colleague James has chronicled at TheGamer, things have only gotten crazier and crazier since Geoff sent his initial post into the ether of the Internet.
Because, as it turns out, the statue is a real-life thing that people can go visit because the three words Geoff shared point to a spot in the Mojave Desert.
Not only is it a real thing, but depending on what time of day you end up in the middle of nowhere, if it’s at night, then the thing actually lights up in bloody red, turning the statue from a God of War teaser to a Diablo teaser in a matter of hours!
Which is to say, at the moment, it’s not GOW, but could also be GOW. And also somehow Diablo or The Elder Scrolls. Heck, let’s make things more interesting and throw Doom into the mix.
