Last night, Geoff Keighley posted a cryptic photo of a strange petrified corpse pile beside a yonic doorway in the desert, captioned, “regal.inspiring.thickness”. Presumably, it’s a tease for some showstopping reveal at The Game Awards, but what exactly that might be, nobody is sure.
Some have speculated that the giant, monstrous crocodile reaching out with its oddly humanoid arm is a Daedroth, while others noted that the armour featured in the centre resembles the Carved Nordic set, or even Elven. u/Kami-no-dansei, meanwhile, put forward that the figure below the crocodile looks like a Dremora, though, as some refuted, it has vampiric teeth and more monstrous features.
The theory goes that this is a doorway in the Hammerfell desert, perhaps leading to Molag Bal’s shrine, with the ‘Dremora’ being one of his vampire spawn, and the forlorn, ghostly figures carved into the rock embodying the Soul Shriven. That Elven armour may, in fact, be Harken’s from the Dawnguad DLC of Skyrim. It’s a solid theory, but it’s also worth noting that Todd Howard expressed regret for announcing The Elder Scrolls 6 too soon, and only just said that it’s “a long way off”, so the odds of it showing up are very low.
Another popular idea is that Keighley is teasing a God of War sequel, finally taking Kratos to Egypt, but the only real evidence is the vague desert backdrop (which doesn’t look very Egyptian, either) and the hotly contested armour that somewhat resembles Lunda’s.
Others claim that the bear head and doorway look like they were pulled directly from Diablo 4, perhaps alluding to a new expansion, and then there’s what appears to be Malenia’s helmet from Elden Ring, sandwiched above the crocodile.
It’s a Rosarch test for gamers; look close enough, and I’m sure you’ll connect the dots to whatever fantasy series you’re most interested in. The real mystery is the caption, but after deciphering what it might mean, we’re only left with more questions.
Is Geoff Keighley Teasing Something Fallout?
u/Onsiterecordings entered Keighley’s tease into ‘What3Words’, an app that generates three-word addresses in place of GPS coordinates, and it landed on a grid in the Mojave, which fits the desert in the photo far more than Egypt or Hammerfell. “The trees are distinctly from that region,” u/fjbdhdhrdy47972 explained. “Pretty sure they’re specifically Joshua trees.”
The obvious answer then is that this is a Fallout tease, maybe for Season 2 of the Prime Video show. After all, it’s taking us back to the Mojave Desert and New Vegas, lining up with the three words and background. But each word in that caption evokes fantasy, as does the doorway filled with monstrous creatures, vampiric demons, and ghostly corpses. So, we’re back to a confusing mishmash.
If anything, this appears to be a tease for The Game Awards itself. Keighley is known for his cryptic posts layered in mystery to drum up hype, like the screenshot he shared earlier this month of the Steam store, featuring just one game on his wishlist. Again, here we are with a vague, nondescript tease that could mean anything. Maybe it’s hinting at Fallout, Diablo 4, and The Elder Scrolls. Or maybe it’s a brand-new MMO!
We’ll find out soon enough, as TGA kicks off on December 11. In the meantime, don’t get your hopes up too much for The Elder Scrolls 6 or God of War; it probably isn’t either of them.
