Unlike in film and music, whose award seasons take place the following year, typically in February and March, we’re in the thick of awards season for video games, beginning with The Golden Joystick Awards, where Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 cleaned the house, and ending with The Game Awards, which recently revealed all of its nominees ahead of the December event.
As expected, Expedition 33, Hollow Knight: Silksong and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach are all nominated for Game of the Year as well as several other awards, and come 2026, assuming there’s not another delay, it’s widely expected that Grand Theft Auto 6 will dominate nearly every category.
Good News, It’s Now Officially Cool To Start Hating On Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
After receiving 12 nominations at The Game Awards, people seem to be turning against Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
If things hold, there’s a good chance that GTA 6 will outbeat The Witcher 3, one of the most nominated and successful titles of its year, but if you ask Doug Cockle, the voice behind Geralt of Rivia, if that’s some bother to him, the answer is a firm no.

In an interview with GamesRadar during The Golden Joystick Awards, Cockle was told that GTA 6 could surpass The Witcher 3’s all-time record of ten awards spread over four years, to which Cockle made it clear that he isn’t all that interested in awards season battles.
“Oh man, this is a game I really don’t care about,” Cockle said. “I think Witcher 3 is a great game, and GTA 6, when it comes out, will probably be a great game. So whatever it is, it is. Enjoy your games, have fun with them.”

Later that night, Grand Theft Auto 6 began its pre-release awards season march, winning both “Best Game Trailer” and “Most Wanted Game,” giving it two awards, or the same number of trailers we’ve had or the same number of delays we’ve experienced.
That said, in order for GTA 6 to match the might of The Witcher 3, it’ll not only have to get nominations in several categories, but actually win them. During its run, TW3 was sweeping things like “Best Storytelling,” “Best Performer” and “Best Gaming Moment,” which I’m sure GTA 6 will probably see nominations for, but also I’m not so sure GTA 6 will necessarily win those awards.
Provided that there isn’t a delay, we’ll find out in a year if it does match or overtake The Witcher 3, and then I’m sure Cockle will be asked once again for his thoughts. Maybe he’ll change his tune, but it seems like Geralt really just wants to live his life.
