Remember when Doomfist was a Damage hero? No, me neither. He never was. That is why Vendetta is Overwatch’s first melee Damage hero. Totally.
Okay, so for those of you out of the loop, Doomfist was actually a Damage hero back in ye olden days of the original Overwatch. He is also a melee-focused hero, so therefore, you would think that made him a melee Damage character, but apparently not, because Vendetta is being touted as the first one coming to the game.
No One Can Decide What Kind Of Damage Hero Doomfist Was In OG Overwatch
“No one’s safe when Vendetta’s on the battlefield,” reads a recent post from the Overwatch account. “Claim your vengeance as our first-ever melee Damage hero during Vendetta’s limited-time Hero Trial.”
It’s that last part that got everyone’s attention – “first-ever melee Damage hero”. Because… Doomfist was filling that role for some time. I guess you could say that Vendetta is the first one in Overwatch 2? Or perhaps Blizzard doesn’t want you to remember how long Doom was fumbled for until they sort of figured out what to do with him.
But of course, this has also sparked a debate amongst fans; was Doom ever a melee character? I mean, I would say yes, given that his name is Doomfist and he is best known for punching people with his fist. But others argue that he isn’t, because he does have a projectile attack too. And… sure, I guess that’s true. But c’mon, he’s Doomfist. Not Doom-projectile-you-only-use-to-finish-off-enemies-you-already-attacked-with-your-fist.
Either way, I would argue Blizzard’s wording is wrong, and Overwatch’s history should be respected, warts and all. In fairness, Blizzard did just that with the classic modes in Overwatch 2, which brought the game back to its terrible launch-day state, as well as other metas from the first game. I say “terrible” endearingly. I truly adore all of the hurdles the game went through, as you see with any live service.
In any case, Vendetta will be temporarily available to play as from November 26 to December 1. She will then be fully playable in Season 20.
