Skate Has Already Lost More Than 90 Percent Of Its Playercount

It looks like Skate is struggling to keep its live-service audience’s attention, as it’s lost over 90 percent of its peak playercount on Steam since it launched.

When it was first announced that EA was finally going to be giving us another Skate, everyone was overjoyed. At least, they were until EA confirmed that the reboot would be a live-service game that focused on online elements, instead of a traditional single-player experience like the rest of the series.

While Skate is actually pretty well-suited to a live-service approach, all things considered, it’s had a bit of a rough go of things ever since its Early Access launch two months ago. Even if a lot of players were surprised at how much fun they were having with Skate, it seems like it’s not been enough to hold many players’ interest for long, though.

Hell Of A Line

Over on the Skate 4 subreddit, a lot of the recent posts have been about the game’s falling playercount over the last few weeks. Redditor Disastrous-Club-2861 pointed out that Skate recently had 3,620 active players, a remarkable fall from its peak of 134,901 player base back when it launched on September 21.

If you’re looking for another way to give Skate your money, you’re in luck.

As of the time of writing, SteamDB tells us that Skate’s 24-hour peak was 9,671, with its highest playercount this week being around 12,000 players. Comparing that to its launch number, that means that Skate has lost over 90 percent of its players on Steam in just over two months, which is a pretty staggering drop.

As always, it’s worth noting that Steam numbers don’t count for everything, as Skate is also available on PlayStation and Xbox. Still, it’s a pretty sharp drop-off for a live-service game.

Of course, every big game eventually starts dropping below its launch peak where most players are going to be checking it out for the first time, but it’s particularly notable considering Skate’s live-service ambitions. When single-player games lose their audience, it’s not such a big deal, but it’s a worrying sign for an online game that’s really only just got started.

On the positive side, recent reviews for Skate are actually “Mostly Positive”, so it seems like the game has been getting better with recent updates. It’s just a shame that the one thing that most Skate fans agreed was a bad idea for the reboot, the live-service elements, seems to be the thing that’s going to work against it the most in the long run.
