As of today, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is officially out on all major consoles, helping close out what has been a rather strong year for shooter video games, what with the revival of Battlefield via Battlefield 6, the breakout hit that is Arc Raiders, along with a new Doom and Borderlands 4. In other words, if you like the “pew pew,” then 2025 is for you.
That said, while most of the games on that list have enjoyed an extended amount of fanfare, the same can’t be said for Black Ops 7, as the game had a rather pedestrian launch, especially by Call of Duty standards. Now, if there was ever any reason for fans to have even more issues with Black Ops 7, then it seems like Treyarch is putting a particular emphasis on streamers and content creators.
Allow us to explain: Black Ops 7 comes bundled with a “Green Screen” multiplayer map that is accessible via Private Matches that will allow content creators to capture the perfect picture for their thumbnails.
“This has been a goal for us ever since we added a green screen to the Studio map back in BO2,” the announcement on Twitter read. It’s a nice touch, but considering that this made it into the launch version of the game, but not a way to pause the campaign, it’s a bit of a head-scratcher.
Black Ops 7 Isn’t Sitting Well With Fans As It Is
The presence of a content creator-specific “Green Screen” map isn’t likely to help shift the conversation around Black Ops 7 into a more positive direction. If anything, it will only give reason for players to continue to pile on.
Beyond some rather mediocre launch numbers on Steam, the game is already sitting at “Mixed” status, with many gamers pointing to the campaign as one of the game’s biggest issues. More specifically, the inability to pause the campaign coupled with a rather goofy-looking story has fans incensed.
That’s not to mention the use of AI. Black Ops 7’s Steam page has disclosed the use of Generative AI for asset creation, and fans are all over the obvious examples that are in the game, including some calling cards that look like they were ripped straight out of Grok.
If there’s one word to describe all this, it’s this — Yikes.
