The Last Caretaker puts you in charge of rebuilding a broken world. You are a robot who has been designated the caretaker of this shattered environment and must explore, scavenge, craft, and occasionally fight in order to rebuild humanity. Your actions will decide the world’s fate.
To help along the way, you’ll have different skills which you can level to help you with your quest. These will enable you to craft all the items you need to rebuild a fully functioning society in this hostile environment.
This game is in Early Access, so some of the information in this guide may change slightly over time.
What Are Skills?
Skills is a slightly misleading name as they are more like blueprints, or recipes. There are 21 tier levels for skills and each one contains two to eight new blueprints. You’ll need skill points to unlock each one, although you won’t always get enough skill points to take every skill at the level as you unlock it. Therefore, it’s good to know what is available at each level.
Once you’ve learned a skill, you will find that the item it unlocked is craftable by any fabricator, as long as you have the appropriate crafting materials.
How Do I Level Skills?
You need to gain experience to unlock both tier levels and skill points to unlock and purchase the blueprints at each skill level. You can experience by:
- Dismantling items
- Recycling scraps
- Crafting items
- Fighting enemies
- Completing quests
The experience gain feels slow but does ramp up quickly. If you spend more time dismantling items and recycling and crafting them from the start, then you’ll find you unlock higher skill levels before you can even use the items they unlock.

Make sure to grab the dismantle tool as soon as you hit this level. You’ll need this to break down items into scraps which you can recycle for resources. We also recommend unlocking all the other skills at this level before continuing.

We recommend taking the diesel generator to help keep your ship fueled. You’ll find that you have easy access to fabricators and recyclers for a good chunk of the game, so these are less important.

The bolt pistol is a neat weapon, but you will need to craft and carry a lot of ammo, which can be a pain. The petrol generators you won’t likely use yet.
