You probably know Jennifer English for her amazing work as Shadowheart in Baldur’s Gate 3, or as Maelle in 2025’s Game of the Year front-runner, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. She’s one of the leading voices for queer representation in video games, and she often recalls how Baldur’s Gate 3 broached the topic “so, so well.”
If she were given the opportunity to create anything, though, English revealed that her dream would be to step outside the video game world, focusing her attention on a queer genre film.
Shadowheart Actress Would Make A Queer Genre Film If Given The Chance
During the launch of TIVA, a self-funded audiobook project featuring the most prominent actors in video games, Baldur’s Gate trio Jennifer English, Devora Wilde (Lae’zel), and Aliona Baranova (performance director), were asked what project they would undertake if given a million-pound budget. English wasted no time with her answer.
“I would definitely do some kind of queer genre film,” she said. “I’m not sure what, but I’d want to work with The Avengers of shes, theys, gays, and allies. Something really inclusive, and badass, and something that hasn’t been made before.” Her Baldur’s Gate colleague and real-life partner, Baranova, echoed English’s sentiments, saying, “That’s my answer, too.”
Wilde, on the other hand, said she’d blow the whole budget on making a comedic pilot with her friends, produced by TIVA executive producer and Dragon Age and Mass Effect star Alix Wilton Regan, saying, “It would be the best pilot ever.”
The project the trio were taking part in, TIVA (True Indie Voice Art), is aiming to fight back against AI and “the exploitation of artists,” and will feature a cast made up of all-female and non-binary actors. In an interview with us at TheGamer, Baranova called the efforts “really f**king cool” and “radical”, with Wilde adding that “the story [Pax Romana, one of TIVA’s two launch audiobooks] is much the same, if not better, for having been voiced by women and non-binary actors.”
Now we just need to find a way to get a million pounds into English’s hands and see the magic that she could cook up.
