Possibly the most exciting part of any game in the Pokemon franchise is catching the super-rare and very powerful legendary Pokemon, and Pokemon Legends: Z-A is no exception to that hype. However, unlike previous titles, you’re going to have to complete the entire game before you finally manage to get your hands on even one.
These legendaries are no joke either, requiring you to complete a set of small tasks before you’re thrown into a grueling battle against the clock. Just like alpha Pokemon, legendary Pokemon have little room for error. To catch them all, all the practice and precision you have acquired on your journey will be needed here.
How To Begin The Search For Legendary Pokemon
Legendary Pokemon are locked to the post-game content. They have far higher base stats than normal Pokemon and are Shiny-locked (meaning you cannot catch their shiny forms).
There are only three legendaries you can catch:
You will have to complete all Main Missions up until you unlock the credits sequence. This means that all content below here is going to contain big spoilers, so consider this your:
Spoiler Warning!!!
AZ’s Floette is not a legendary Pokemon, but it is shiny-locked and can only be caught once. We have added a section for her unique acquisition as a special Pokemon.
Once the credits have rolled, you need to begin the Main Quest 39: The Infinite Z-A Royale. Once you have completed a single Reward Match against the infamous taxi driver, you will receive a phone call asking you to return to Hotel Z.
As you enter the door, a cutscene will play that will lead to the activation of the legendary quests:
- The One Who Gives (Xerneas)
- The One Who Takes (Yveltal)
You can take on these quests in any order, but you will have to complete both before you may be allowed the opportunity to both challenge the final secret boss and catch Zygarde.
The One Who Gives: How To Catch Xerneas
Your task of catching Xerneas starts with making a visit to the Pokemon Research Lab. Talk to Mable, and she will give you the task to defeat three unique alpha Pokemon in the following zones:
- Zone 3: Steelix
- Zone 5: Gallade
- Zone 9: Pangoro
You can defeat or capture all three of these alphas. Regardless, they must be removed in some way from their Wild Area to count.
Return to Mable, and she will alert you to a strange presence in Zone 11 (the one with all those terrible stunfisk). Go down to the grassy area on the south shoreline, and you can Investigate to make Xerneas appear.

This is a combat scenario where you will have to catch Xerneas. Although it is not possible to fail capturing it (as Xerneas will thankfully reappear after), we recommend saving in front of Xerneas to reset for good stats.
The One Who Takes: How To Catch Yveltal
Once this Main Mission is active, you should visit the Nouveau Cafe. Upon approaching, you’ll get a cutscene where you talk to Griselle and Grisham. Your dialogue choices don’t matter here, so exhaust dialogue until they mention Quasartico Inc..
At Quasartico Inc., approaching Vinnie will trigger yet another cutscene after which you unlock the ability to rechallenge simulations of previously fought Rogue Mega Pokemon. You will have to defeat three to unlock Yveltal:
- Tyranitar
- Victreebel
- Hawlucha
Each of these will be improved versions of their older selves, appearing at Level 70. You will not get assistance from your old MZ colleagues either.
Once you have finished with your nostalgia battles, you will get an alert that Yveltal is approaching. Therefore, head to the Rouge District shopping center: Galleria de la Lune.
Yveltal will be on the roof of the gallery, requiring you to climb up onto the roof via the scaffolding on the northwest side of the gallery (close to Zone 3). Once on top, you have to use your Rotom Glide to get on top of the dome structure and Investigate at the center.

Like Xerneas, you cannot fail to catch Yveltal. However, we still recommend saving if you want to reset for better stats.
How To Catch Zygarde
Once you have caught both Xerneas and Yveltal, you will have all the requirements for catching Zygarde. However, unlike all previous important events, there are no Main Mission directives pointing you in the right direction. Without a prompt, you can return to Hotel Z after catching both legendaries to trigger L’s arrival.
When L appears, he will challenge you to a battle. He is the strongest trainer you will face in Legends: Z-A, so you should absolutely bring your best Pokemon. His team is as such:

Once you have defeated L, Zygarde will appear and give you your final mission, Main Mission 42: To Keep The World In Balance. This will prompt you to follow it to Zone 20.
Zygarde will wait for you under the remains of Prism Tower. Here, you will have your final Pokemon boss battle against Zygarde itself, and it will appear as Level 84 in three stages:
- 10 percent
- 50 percent
- Complete Form
Zygarde is thankfully very simple to face, with weaknesses against Dragon and Fairy and a x4 weakness against Ice. The greatest threat it poses is with its large area attacks during the Complete Form stage.
We recommend buying a Green Canari Plush at level one or two just to be safe in case of accidents during the Complete Form phase. Resetting can be time-consuming and frustrating over a small dodging error.
Once Zygarde’s final form is defeated in battle, you will receive a chance to throw a Poke Ball at it. This ball will always succeed, so throw one that you think Zygarde would look cool in.
With Zygarde captured, L will greet you once again to give you the Zygarde Cube. This will allow Zygarde to change forms during battle. Of course, you already have the Zygardite, so you will have everything you need for your newest team member.
How To Get AZ’s Floette
AZ’s Floette (also known as Eternal Flower Floette) may not be a legendary Pokemon, but it is certainly special. You can only acquire one per save file, and the means of finally getting her are quite time and energy-exhausting.
To unlock the right to acquire AZ’s Floette, you must take on the Infinite Royale. Not once, not twice, but 15 times. That means:
- Getting 50,000 points for a Challenger’s Ticket
- Defeating the random Reward Match opponent
- Completing 14 Reward Matches
We recommend grinding nights, but be aware of your card points. By refraining from quite clearing certain cards, like 20,000 point cards, at the midway point, you can gather enough for a Challenge Ticket, do a Reward Match, and return in the same night to quickly clear a second, and maybe even a third, Challenge Ticket in the same cycle. We did this and managed to clear all 15 Reward Matches in eight nights instead of 14.
On your 15th Reward Match, you will have to face your rival as your opponent. This time, your rival will appear with Pokemon around level 70.

After defeating your rival, return to Quasartico Inc.. There, entering the building will trigger a long cutscene, answering questions about your rival’s past, but – and more importantly – also rewarding you with both AZ’s Floette and the Floettite for its Mega Evolution.
