In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the classic turn-based Pokemon formula is thrown out the window for an interesting modern real-time battle system. This system retains all the classic elements of the series, including the type chart, which means you better have good type diversity on your team.
The Ghost-type is a useful one to have on your team, as it is not only immune to both Fighting and Normal-type moves, but also super effective against the powerful Psychic-type. While there aren’t many Ghost-types lurking in the streets of Lumiose, you better have one ghostly friend on hand ready to take down whatever Mega-powered threats come your way.
Haunter
Middle Stage Supremacy
For those who wish to play differently and not evolve their Pokemon, Haunter is a decent Ghost-type that, with its Ghost and Poison-typing, can provide great damage output at the cost of being a glass cannon. With access to powerful stab moves and being quite speedy, Haunter is strong for a second-stage evolution.
By giving an Alpha Haunter an Eviolite, it actually becomes quite a tanky menace that, while not as hard hitting as its evolution, can still do well. If you want to use Haunter or happen to find a Shiny one and cannot trade it to evolve it, you can get pretty decent mileage out of Haunter for most of the early and mid-game.
Gourgeist
Is It A Trick Or A Treat?
The problem with most Ghost-types is their lack of defensive prowess, but if you are looking for a wall to stop your foes in their tracks, Gourgeist gives you that. Coming in different sizes, if you can get your hands on a Super-size Gourgeist, it will have its bulky defenses plus a meaty HP stat.
Having this alongside both the Grass and Ghost-types means Gourgeist resists Water, Grass, Electric, and Ground while still being immune to Fighting and Normal, which makes it pretty solid against a ton of other Pokemon. Add that to its nice coverage, and you have yourself the perfect Halloween-themed friend to join your team.
Banette
Real-Time Battles Were Not Kind To It
Banette is a wonderful little Ghost Pokemon that can be found quite easily across Lumiose, either as a Shuppet or even a guaranteed Alpha in Wild Zone 15, and it can be a tricky field move setter. Banette is sadly as weak as it looks and not even its Mega can save it in this game.
Even with its Mega Evolution, Banette struggles to be truly worthwhile; however, since there are very few Ghost types, it still has its uses. The main issue is that without abilities in Z-A, Mega Banette loses Prankster, which made all its status moves, like Taunt or Destiny Bond, go first. Without it, Mega Banette is just an average disruption Pokemon that is just outclassed by others.
Trevenant
A Greener Lumiose
Hiding among the trees, you may spot a spooky Grass Ghost-type that lurks waiting to join your party. Trevenant is a Pokemon that mostly just exists, but even with its middling stats, it gets access to nice moves that take advantage of its decent Physical Attack stat to make it worth using if you need a Ghost-type.
While it is a trade evolution from Phantump, you can easily find a wild Alpha Trevenant in Wild Zone 13, which is always guaranteed to spawn at night. Trevenant isn’t bad, but there are just stronger options when it comes to an offensive Ghost-type; however, the Grass Ghost combo makes it defensively alright.
Sableye
A Gem Hidden In The Rough
There are very few Dark and Ghost-type Pokemon for a reason, as this combo is very defensively strong, and Sableye is no different. With immunities to Fighting, Normal, and Psychic and only one weakness in Fairy, Sableye is a great go-to all-rounder that is a safe switch-in for nearly any fight.
The Mega is what truly makes Sableye worth using, as with it, Sableye gets a boost to its defenses and attacks in a trade-off for speed, which makes it even better at being hard to deal with. Combining this with decent coverage options to deal with a range of Pokemon, and you will not regret using Sableye.
Aegislash
Slashing Through The Dead
Representing Kalos as one of the fan favorites, Aegislash is a Ghost and Steel-type that has always stood out. For the low cost of a Dusk Stone and a Doublade, you can acquire this defensive attacker with ease, and once you learn how to take advantage of its form-changing gimmick, you will have a horrifying blade on your side.
Even without a Mega and its signature ability, Aegislash holds strong as a valuable Ghost-type with great Physical Attack and its own special variant of Protect, which lowers the Attack of the opposing Pokemon if hit. Being able to transform between offensive and defensive forms using specific attacks makes Aegislash versatile in any situation, and the Steel-type is always one of the most defensive you can get your hands on.
Froslass
Chilled To The Bone
The Ice and Ghost types are both broad in their coverage, and since Froslass is able to handle both at once, it is a Pokemon you won’t want to mess with. Being a frail supportive Pokemon, Froslass gets access to a range of annoying Ice and Ghost-type moves, all of which will make quick work of a range of other types.
Froslass would likely be lower on this list, but thanks to its wonderful new Mega Evolution, which gives it more Speed and Special Attack, its already wild Ice and Ghost-type moves become even stronger. Froslass is late-game to obtain, but it can carry you throughout the rest of your adventure and even the postgame.
Chandelure
Burning Foes To Ashes
Generation Five is home to some of the best Pokemon designs out there, but none hold a candle to the Chandelure line. Despite requiring a Dusk Stone to evolve, Chandelure is more than worth the time and effort it takes to get with its blazing Special Attack stat and frightening Mega.
Both Fire and Ghost are wonderfully strong offensive types, and with how Special Attack-focused Chandelure is in its Mega form, you will be able to decimate a range of foes with ease. Chandelure is quite literally like a chandelier, though, and will shatter easily if you aren’t careful, so make sure to have Protect on its moveset to keep it safe.
Gengar
The Most Beloved Ghost
Gengar is not only one of the most popular Ghost-types for its design, but also for its power. In Legends Z-A, there is no other Ghost-type that is as strong as Gengar, with its high Special Attack and Speed, decent coverage, and Mega to push it even further; Gengar is a worthy addition to any team.
Being a trade evolution, Gengar might be hard for you to get a hold of, but luckily, it does have one natural spawn location, which is during the first job Corbeau sends you on in the story. If you do have friends, though, Gastly can be found in Wild Zone Four, and with it evolving into Haunter at the low level of 25 and Gengar’s Mega Stone being found in the Stone Emporium, you can become unstoppable with a Gengar very early.
