Halo Fans Really Aren’t Happy With Campaign Evolved’s Needler

Halo fans really aren’t happy about the Needler’s design in Campaign Evolved, as it’s basically the same one from Infinite, pointless ammo counter and all.

If there’s one thing that even the most diehard Halo haters can praise the series for, it’s the wonderful suite of weapons that Bungie introduced in the original trilogy. From the Energy Sword and Gravity Hammer to the Battle Rifle and Plasma Pistol, Halo has more than its fair share of iconic arms.

While the Energy Sword is arguably the poster child for Halo as a whole, I think most fans would agree that the Needler is the quintessential Halo weapon, and has been since it was introduced in Combat Evolved. The Needler has gone through many changes over the years, but none are getting as much flak as the one in Campaign Evolved.

Just Like Halo Infinite, Campaign Evolved’s Needler Has A Pointless Ammo Counter

The Needles Are The Counter!

Yesterday, Halo Studios finally confirmed the long-running rumours that it’s working on a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved by revealing Campaign Evolved to the world at the Halo Championship Series. So far, the reactions to the remake have been pretty mixed, with even original Halo developers calling out its attempts to streamline the Halo experience.

Fans have found plenty to be annoyed at already, but one of the most common complaints I’ve seen so far is about the Needler, which, just like Halo Infinite, includes an ammo counter. That’s right, the most unique weapon in Halo that didn’t need an ammo counter since its needles do the job now has a little screen with the same information.

Don’t even get me started on how boring the needles look compared to the alien-looking ones from the original Halo, although that’s a long-standing issue with the series now.

Although Infinite’s updated Needler didn’t get too much hate at the time, its inclusion in Campaign Evolved is certainly catching a lot of heat, and not just because some think its needles look like “Hot Takis”. All over Twitter and the Halo subreddit, fans are calling out the Needler’s updated design, with most of them just wanting to see the original model back and given a new coat of paint.

While the ammo counter problem really stems from Infinite, it at least made some sense there since Infinite takes place long after the original game. Now it just comes off as an “asset flip” and a lazy way of streamlining a gun that already told players everything they needed to know. Let’s just pray an original skin is in there somewhere.
