Just one week after popular Twitch streamer and personality Emily Schunk, who is more commonly known as Emiru, was assaulted by a man during a scheduled meet-and-greet session during this year’s TwitchCon, the live-streaming platform has issued a statement acknowledging that it had failed to protect one of its own.

The statement, which was issued by CEO Dan Clancy, includes an apology to Emiru before sharing that the company is analyzing every aspect of its process, from sign-ups to security at events.

“You put a lot of trust in us by attending TwitchCon, and we take our responsibility to keep you safe seriously. We know that TwitchCon means a lot to a lot of people, and it means a lot to us,” the statement ended in part. “Be on the lookout for more updates, and thanks for being a part of Twitch.”

Twitch Previously Claimed That Safety Was Among Its Top Priorities

Following the attack on Emiru, Clancy sat down with Taylor Lorenz in an attempt to clear the air and address the situation head-on. What instead happened was a direct conflict of the circumstances that Emiru found herself in.

Specifically, Clancy noted that safety is “top priority” for Twitch, and that Twitch’s own tools are “leaders of the industry.” However, Emiru quickly disputed that assertion, backed by video evidence showcasing how easily the man was able to bypass safeguards.

Emiru has already made it known that she will not be attending TwitchCon again. That said, whatever changes Twitch does make following its analysis should help prevent futue situations. At the very least, Emiru was given the much-needed and highly-deserved apology she should’ve originally received.
