Better than its predecessor in virtually every way, A Plague Tale: Requiem is a proper sequel that improves its familiar gameplay mechanics and couples them with stunning PS5 visuals and an engaging story. It doesn’t completely rewrite the script, but taking a page from the Naughty Dog playbook, this is a cinematic adventure more than worth your time.

Balatro puts an ingenious roguelike spin on poker, and it plays unlike anything else. Each run has you using poker hands to score a points target, but the real fun comes when you start to build upon your deck of playing cards with an enormous variety of modifiers, upgrades, and augmentations. The ways that all its various mechanics intertwine create huge potential for outrageously powerful synergies, and watching the numbers tot up as your regular hand is boosted by special Jokers and card effects is incredibly satisfying. There’s lots of stuff to collect, difficulty levels to conquer, and challenges to complete. There’s a reason it’s one of 2024’s breakout hits — it’s a fantastic, unique roguelike.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden marries an excellent narrative with engaging and enjoyable gameplay. Poor enemy variety and technical flaws hold it back from true greatness, but its excellent, story-focused side quests on the other side make a few drab combat encounters worth pushing through. The studio’s best game to date, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a new IP we hope is here to stay.

A compelling combination of first-person puzzle solving with roguelike elements, Blue Prince is a unique and deceptively deep adventure. Rich with puzzles and secrets, you’ll discover or learn something new every time you build your way through the mysterious mansion. There’s far more to this game than meets the eye, and for its most determined players, there’s a high degree of satisfaction to be found in peeling back its many layers.

One of EA’s best-loved games returns with this PS5 remake of Dead Space. Retelling the original story of Isaac Clarke exploring the decimated corridors of the USG Ishimura, this updated version is more than just a fresh coat of paint. On top of modern visuals, the remake turns the ship into one interconnected environment, expands many areas, adds voice acting for Isaac, and more. Aside from all that, this is the same great Dead Space you remember — intense atmosphere, unique enemies and weapons, and a memorable story.

Death Stranding Director’s Cut takes the truly unique “strand game” adventure and dials things up a notch for PS5. Hideo Kojima and his team created a haunting and strange world with the original game, tasking players with traversing a desolate and dangerous landscape to make deliveries. It shouldn’t work, but it does — every step you take can be a risk, and this need to watch your footing is an interesting way to create tension, especially when those nasty BTs show up. Director’s Cut enhances the experience with improved graphics and performance, DualSense support, 3D audio, and a range of new content.

Arkane Studios is known for its immersive sims like Dishonored, and with Deathloop, the developer takes that formula in a bold new direction. Playing as an assassin caught in a time loop on an island filled with disdainful characters, it’s your job to eliminate all of them within one cycle, else you’ll need to start again. The joy of the game is in slowly figuring out the right sequence of events that need to take place in order for you to crack the code and break the loop. A higher emphasis on action combined with some super fun powers makes this feel like a supercharged Dishonored. The loop mechanic and threat of player invasions provides some tension, and it’s all delivered with a fantastic 60s aesthetic.

The original Dying Light game might have gone under the radar critically, but it certainly sold impressively well on PS4. As such, expectations were high for this PS5 sequel, with developer Techland promising all sorts of narrative choices and intriguing story beats. And while the finished product didn’t live up to those claims, the actual open world title is still a fun one. Looking for something to turn your brain off to and start slicing and dicing the undead? You can’t do much better than Dying Light 2. Complete with an awesome parkour moveset, traversal has never felt this good.

There’s no denying that Final Fantasy VII Remake is one of the best Final Fantasy games in years, and Intergrade is the icing on the cake. Yes, it’s only one part of the story, and yes, a few of the, er, changes are going to annoy some fans forevermore, but there’s a healthy helping of Final Fantasy VII magic at the heart of Remake. Whether it’s in the way that the characters have been re-realised or the outstanding boss fights (and excellent combat system), charging through Remake is a rewarding experience — especially if you’re big on nostalgia.

In its third generation, GTA 5’s unwavering commercial popularity looks unlikely to ease. Presented for the first time on consoles in 4K at 60fps, this is undoubtedly the best-looking version of Los Santos to date. While elements of the graphics and gameplay are beginning to show their age, this open world is largely unmatched, and despite GTA Online having some serious onboarding issues, its continued expansion makes it an unparalleled multiplayer mode with an identity all of its own.

The force is strong with this one. While there have been several instalments in the past, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is the culmination of TT Games’ previous efforts. Encompassing all nine mainline movies, this is a huge platformer adventure featuring all the most iconic sequences you remember from the big screen. When you’re not progressing the story, it turns into a sandbox, letting you explore myriad locations from the films and play as one of hundreds of characters. Its gameplay is also more modern than the older LEGO Star Wars titles, sharpening up shooting and making combat more exciting. There’s so much to see and do here that Star Wars fans need not play anything else for a while.

Live A Live is an incredibly interesting and unique JRPG experience. With lovely HD-2D graphics and numerous main characters, it’s hard not to compare it to the likes of Octopath Traveler, but it really is a completely different kettle of fish. Live A Live is a varied thrill ride that still impresses all these years later, and while the combat does struggle to live up to the rest of the adventure, the game does a fantastic job of tying all of its intriguing, individual stories together. It’s a history-hopping journey we’ll be thinking about for quite some time.

Insomniac Games invested a huge amount of effort into Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, rebuilding New York City to take full advantage of the PS5 hardware, without interfering with the critically acclaimed action of the PS4 original. Some vocal fans were frustrated by the changes to protagonist Peter Parker’s face – but with new visual effects like ray tracing, in addition to silky smooth 60 frames-per-second refresh rates, this is the definitive way to experience Sony’s superb superhero sandbox. It even includes all of the original’s inconsequential but enjoyable expansion packs!
