30th Anniversary Edition Hit With “Mixed” Steam Reviews

30th Anniversary Edition Hit With “Mixed” Steam Reviews

Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition is being hit with some surprising negative reviews on Steam, and they’re mostly focused on the collection’s new soundtrack, which doesn’t “feel as special”.

There were a lot of exciting announcements during this week’s State of Play, from a God of War trilogy remake to the reveal of a new Dead or Alive game in development. For my money, though, the biggest moment was the long-awaited return of Rayman, who is getting a special re-release of his first adventure to celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary.

From the trailer, it looked like Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition was giving fans exactly what they wanted from a re-release of the original game, with five unique versions, a museum chronicling the character’s creation, and even making the SNES prototype playable for everyone for the first time. Those positives are being undermined by one big thing, though – the soundtrack.

Rayman Fans Aren’t Happy With The Anniversary Edition Re-Release

It’s Mostly About The Soundtrack, But There Are Other Issues

Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition launched yesterday, and while it seemed primed to be an instant hit with fans, that’s not quite the case. As of the time of writing, Anniversary Edition is sitting with a “Mixed” review score on Steam after 143 reviews, with more than half of those being negative.

The big reason for all of the uproar is that the Anniversary Edition has completely replaced the original soundtrack by Rémi Gazel (who sadly passed in 2019) with one created by Origins and Legends composer Christophe Héral. While Héral is legendary in his own right, fans aren’t happy that there’s no option to switch between the two and think that the new music doesn’t quite fit Rayman’s vibes as well.

The replaced soundtrack is all that most fans seem to be talking about right now, and most agree that it takes away a big part of playing such an iconic game. That’s not the only issue, though, as the reviews are also frustrated with the usual forcing of Ubisoft Connect, while other players mention having some issues with save files being deleted.

It’s a real shame to see the Anniversary Edition being met with such mixed reviews so far, since it seems to do so much right. Here’s hoping that the original soundtrack can be added as an option to the game, or at least that Héral’s version of the OST is eventually accepted in its own right.
